Jack Eames

The reason I love Jack's work is because he brings elements of the street into his studio photography, where as normally you see aesthetically beautiful backdrops against the extravagant fashion wear, Jack uses gritty backdrops and fashion clothing that i cant help but think takes influence from the red light district where he first started photographing.

It interests me because I am all for street photography and to be honest I didn't care much for studio shoots as they seemed to posed and unrealistic however jack manages to take me away from that within his photographs, he represents the street with the backdrop and the clothing and actually pulls it off.

Its as though he has brought the red light district into the forefront of fashion photography just as I wish to do with homelessness, the crisp clinical aesthetics compliment the hard hitting styles of hair and clothing. As opposed to all this dominating the focus I see the whole image as one focus point, each aspect compliments the next, for example the bold contrasts between the black and white are mimicked throughout the apparel, paint from the backdrop has worked its way onto the clothing is a messy fashion and this is juxtaposed with the hard black buttons on the cuff that are designed to be there. To me this gives a feeling of the un-conforming street rubbing of onto what is definite, giving what is definite an alternative edge and so the photograph feels as though it has more of a story to tell as opposed to just selling or showing the clothing.

I have contacted Jack who I will go to meet in london within the next few weeks and sit in on one of his fashion photo shoots, I hope to gain as much experience as i can from this world renowned photographer and let his techniques and outlooks play a part in influencing my own photography. I have focused on Jacks work as a primary influence for one of my photo shoots already and I was happy with the aesthetic outcome, of course i can see massive room for improvement but i also saw a massive jump in improvement from the photographs I have previously taken and i want to continue this journey until i am the best i can be.
